New Ringgold, PA -
More than a dozen flea-infested dogs rescued from hoarders have found a temporary home at a rescue in Schuylkill County.
Char-Wills German Shepherd Rescue took in 16 dogs - almost exclusively German shepherds - last week after the pets were rescued from a hoarding situation in West Virginia that went from bad to worse after their elderly owners developed health issues of their own.
Diane Buhl, founder of the rescue, said the animals were underweight and covered in fleas when volunteers arrived. Those kept in small cages outside were splattered in mud, and those found inside were fearful of the outdoors. None of the dogs was spayed or neutered.
"We were contacted by the director of a nursing home who told us that an elderly couple living there were no longer able to take care of these dogs," she said. "Our facility is not really set up for this many dogs, but we just could not ignore what was happening."
Once they decided to take them in, Buhl said, getting them to Pennsylvania was one of the biggest challenges they faced.
But, luckily, a friend at the American Humane Association offered her their air-conditioned travel trailer to make the nearly four-hour trip to New Ringgold.
Now the rescue is in the process of nursing the animals back to health.
At the moment, Buhl said, her team believes the dogs are 2 to 8 years old. Most have never been leash-trained, and all will need to be house-trained before they are ready to be adopted.
And, as volunteers get to know the dogs, they will be able to make suggestions as to which are better suited for families with children and which are going to need additional training.
"I'm hoping that in a week or two most of the dogs will be ready to go to good homes," she said. "They just need more food and a little patience. And we know some are a little older, but I'm hoping that people will open their hearts to them."
