PHOENIX - Authorities say a toddler has died after he was attacked by dogs at his babysitter's home in suburban Phoenix.

Fire officials say both the 2½-year-old child and the 28-year-old babysitter suffered significant injuries in the attack Sunday afternoon.

Gilbert police Sgt. Jesse Sanger tells KNXV that the babysitter was watching five children when she tried to break up a fight among three of her dogs.

He says that somehow the child got involved in the fray and was attacked. None of the other children were hurt.

The boy was taken to Gilbert Mercy Hospital where he died. Sanger says that the babysitter underwent surgery at a Scottsdale hospital. There was no immediate word on her condition.

No names were available.

Animal control took the dogs. Their breed wasn't immediately clear.
